Locater Tech TipsIssue: Scanner Not Being Recognized
Symptoms: Software unable to detect scanner
Resolution:
- Unplug power to the scanner.
- Confirm the scanner is in an unlocked position (locking toggle is on back left hand side of scanner).
- Reboot the computer.
- Plug USB cable for the scanner into the front of the machine.
- Plug power back in.
- Dialog will appear that new hardware has been found.
- Hit cancel when a dialog asks for software CD's.
- The scanner is now set up.
Symptoms: When retrieving e-mail continually prompted to enter account name and password
Resolution:
- Open Windows Explorer.
- On the main menu, select Tools | Folder Options. Folder options dialog appears.
- Click the View tab.
- Check the box that reads Show all hidden files and folders. It is the fourth line.
- Click the Data D: drive.
- Click the Driver Directories folder.
- Right click the file named server or server.reg.
- Click merge. Registry Editor dialog appears.
- Click yes.
- Repeat the last action 3 times.
- Reboot the machine.
- Re-enter password.
Symptoms: Unable to open e-mail attachments
Resolution:
- Open Outlook Express.
- On the main menu, select Tools | Options | Security. Security dialog appears.
- Uncheck the box that reads Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
Symptoms: Incorrect information displayed on LOCATER posters/logfiles
Resolution:
- On the Windows toolbar, click Start | Search | For Files or Folders. Search for files or folders dialog appears.
- If you are getting the error in the training environment, In the Search for files or folders dialog type, Locaterdemo.por.
- Delete the file when it is located.
- If you are getting the error in the live environment, In the Search for files or folders dialog type, Locater.por. This is for the live environment.
- Delete the file when it is located.
- Depending in which application the error occurred; re-open the LOCATER for training application and/or LOCATER application.
- Re-enter organization information in the following manner:
- Organization name - site name. (ex: Osage Police Department) (default information should be deleted)
- Contact information - site contact name in charge of missing persons unit. (Default information should be deleted
- Phone number to call - site phone number to call in the event of discovery of missing person. (Default information should be deleted)
Symptoms: A dialog that states, Transmitting user name and password ****when attempting to connect to local ISP
Resolution:
- On the Windows toolbar, Click the Start | Settings | Network and Dial-up connections | Internet. Internet dialog appears.
- Right click on Internet, select properties. Internet properties dialog appears.
- Select the Security Tab
- Confirm that the Run Interactive Script checkbox is not checked.
- Open Internet Explorer. On the main menu, select Tools | Internet Options. Choose the Connections tab. The Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings dialog appears.
- Highlight Internet.
- Click the Settings button. The Dial-up settings dialog appears.
- Delete all text in the user name and password boxes.
- This should clear up everything in the Test PC2****** nag.
Symptoms: Prompted to enter Product Key when accessing office suite applications
Resolution:
- Log off the LOCATER profile. (start-shutdown-log off LOCATER)
- Now log on as administrator with the administrator password.
- Open Word or Excel. A registration dialogue will appear.
- Enter the site information as required and the product key number.
Symptom: Direct question from the site
Resolution:
- You can download the application from www.locaterposters.org.
- You can call the group line at 703.837.6938.
Symptoms: Can not delete items from the Deleted Items Folder in Outlook Express
Resolution:
- Close Outlook Express.
- Click the Start button.
- Go up to Search | For Files and Folders. Search for files or folders dialog appears.
- In the Search for files or folders dialog type, deleted items.dbx
- When this folder is located delete it.
- Open Outlook Express.
- Deleted Items folder will appear.
- Delete items from that folder.
