Linksys Router Setup
Overview: This document will discuss the proper installation of the Linksys BEFSR11 DSL/CABLE Router.
Before using your Linksys BEFSR11 DSL/CABLE Router, let's go over some Physical features of your router.
- Reset: This button will reset the router to its original configuration.
- WAN Port: The WAN (Wide Area Network) Port is where you will connect your DSL or Cable Modem.
- LAN Port: The LAN (Locale Area Network) Port is where you will connect your Cisco 2900 series 24 Port 10/100 Switch.
- Crossover Switch: This will change the LAN port into an uplink port, allowing you to connect a single system to the router.
- Power: This port is where you will plug the AC Power adapter to the router. The adapter should have been supplied with the router.
On the Front:
LAN:
- Link/Act Light: Normally Green, this light will tell you there is a link between the LAN Port on the router and the device it is attached to. Also if this light is blinking, the LAN Port is actively communicating with the device attached to it.
- Full/Col: Normally Green, if this light is on solid then a successful full duplex connection has been made. If the light is blinking, data packet collisions have been detected on the network.
- 10/100: This light can be Green or Orange. If the light is green, this means a 10Mb connection has been mad. If the light is orange a 100Mb connection has been made.
- Link: Normally Green, this light will tell you there is a link between the LAN Port on the router and the DSL/Cable Modem.
- ACT: Normally Green, this light will blink when the router is sending and receiving data over your DSL/Cable connection.
- Diag: This light will light RED when the router is powering on. If this light is on for an extended amount of time, this means there is something wrong and you should consult the manual for more information.
- Power: This light should always be Green when the router is plugged into it.
Getting Started:
Initial Physical Connections:
- To start you should plug the router into a 120V outlet with the Power adapter provided.
- You will now need to connect your Linksys Router to a computer with a network card. Plug a CAT5 Ethernet Cable into the LAN port on your Linksys Router and plug the other end into the network port on your Computer.
- You should see the link light on your Network Card light up. If it does not light up, switch the crossover switch on the router from || to X.

- You will need to make sure your computer is set to use a dynamically assigned IP address. To do this use the following instructions:
- Right Click on "My Network Places"
- Click on "Properties", this will bring you to a "Network" screen.
- Highlight TCP/IP for your Network adapter, which could be:
- TCP/IP > SMC EZ Card 10/100 (SMC1211TX)
- TCP/IP > Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter (LNE100TX v4)
