Setup Instructions for the HP 2100TN & 4050TN Printers
(Note: These instructions are geared toward the setup of HP printers in a standard PowerUP lab environment. Setup in other situations or where different TCP/IP schemes were used may cause the TCP/IP values to vary.)
Verifying if Your Lab Uses a Standard Configuration
- From one of the lab computers, click on Start and then Run.
- In the Open box, type "winipcfg" without the quotes and press ENTER.
- If this is a Windows 98 system, click on the drop-down box at the top and select either the SMC or 3Com network card driver. If this is a Windows ME system, make sure that the drop-down box has the NDIS 5.0 driver selected.
- Look at the IP Address box. If the value starts with 10.10.1 then you should have a standard configuration and can proceed with the following instructions. If your value is different, consult your network administrator for the appropriate values to use in steps 10-12 of the "Initial Network Setup using HP JetAdmin" section or the "Note" section below step number 16.
(Note: This section and the section on setting up HP JetAdmin are only necessary if you are just receiving your printer for the first time or are receiving a replacement printer. Otherwise, you can skip to the section labeled "Configuring Your Computer to Print to the Network Printer".)
- Follow the setup poster that ships with the HP printer to physically setup the printer and install the toner cartridge.
- After the printer is physically setup, you will need to connect the printer to the network. This is done by opening the cover on the printer's side and connecting a network patch cable. (Please see the picture below) Network patch cables are the same as the cables connecting each computer to the network jacks on the wall of your lab and your lab's installing engineer should have left several behind.
- Once the printer is physically setup and you have connected a patch cable from the printer to a network jack on the wall, turn the printer on. After the printer is powered on, you will need to wait for about 5 minutes before proceeding with the following section.
(Note:This section will walk you through setting up the network setting on the HP 2100TN or 4050TN printers. If you are only trying to configure a reloaded or replaced system to print to the printer, please skip to the section labeled "Configuring Your Computer to Print to the Network Printer".)
- From the Desktop, click on Start, Settings, and then Control Panel.
- From the Control Panel, locate and click on HP JetAdmin
- Click on Device Refresh on the top menu and then click on Rebuild Database and Refresh from the drop-down menu.
- Make sure that nobody is printing to the printer and click on YES to rebuild the database.
- If a printer shows up in the right-hand window, please skip to step number 15. Otherwise, please continue with step number 6.
- From the main menu, click on Device and then click on New.
- A window will appear showing an entry with a series of letters and numbers. From this window, click on the entry to select it and then click on Configure.
- The next screen asks for a printer description. At this point, just click Next. You will define this later.
- Next, select "Manually specify TCP/IP configuration" by placing the dot next to this entry.
- In the TCP/IP Address fields, type the numbers 10, 10, 1, & 9.
- In the Subnet Mask fields, type the numbers 255, 255, 255, & 0.
- In the Subnet Mask fields, type the numbers 255, 255, 255, & 0.
- Click on Next to continue.
- On the final screen, click Finish and you will be returned to the main JetAdmin window.
- You will now see a printer listed on the right-hand side of the screen. Right-click on this printer and choose Modify from the menu.
- In the Description box, type "PowerUP 2100TN". If you have a 4050TN, you would replace 2100TN with 4050TN. Click on the Next button.
- Click on the Next button and then on the Finish button to complete the network portion of the HP JetAdmin setup. You can now close the HP JetAdmin window by clicking on the 'X' in the upper right-hand corner.
(Note: If you skipped to step number 15 from step number 5 previously, verify that "Manually specify TCP/IP configuration" is selected on this screen and that the following fields contain these values:)
